Abstract

 Abstract

Background: Tourism plays an important role in employment generation and economic growth -of the country. Tourism in India is the 3rd largest foreign exchange earner of the country. Hotels are major consumers of resources and contribute heavily towards waste generation in cities as compared to others. In the recent years the waste generation by the Hotels have given birth to various problems in megacities, that need to be addressed soon in order to plan a better future for tomorrow. Objectives: The current study was designed to identify the amount and type of waste generated by the hotels, to identify the waste management practices/procedures followed and to suggest practical remedies to hotels to ensure lower waste generation and ascertain better waste management. Methodology: The current study will have samples from twelve 5-star hotels of Delhi NCR region. Questionnaire will be designed to administer the objectives of the study. A module for practical remedies will also be circulated through emails. Findings: The study determines the gap and establishes a relationship between environment and sustainability practices to utilize waste material. Conclusion: This research will prove that waste is not a waste; it can be a revenue earning source as well. The proposed measures hopefully will be implemented in the sampled hotels.
